The Discarded
The Spanish Galgo is one of the most vulnerable dog breeds in the world. Traditionally, these sighthounds have been used for hunting, particularly small game in Spain. Outside the hunt, they are often kept in tiny cages or on short leads in decidedly inhospitable conditions. They are not considered pets—neither by their owners nor by the state; legally, they are classified more like tools than companions.
Each winter, after the hunting season, thousands of Galgos are abandoned, mistreated, or killed in brutal fashion. They are punished for a poor season, a practice embedded in the local culture. The reasoning of the hunters, or galgueros, is that by punishing the dogs, they wash away the shame supposedly brought upon them by the dogs’ performance.
Fortunately, there are many organisations working tirelessly to improve conditions, educate new generations, and rescue galgos wandering the streets injured or crammed into overcrowded shelters. One of these is @galgosdelsol. My artwork depicts The Discarded and 100% of the proceeds from the first five prints will be donated, followed by 10% of subsequent sales to Galgos Del Sol.
About the print
- Motif: The image is composed entirely of thousands and thousands of tiny ink dots, created through the slow and meticulous technique of stippling.
- Printing technique: Once digitised, each work is produced as a giclée print – a fine art process renowned for its precision, rich detail and archival quality.
- Edition: Each print is signed by the artist and issued in a hand-numbered limited edition of 100. Each print also includes a signed certificate of authenticity.
- Paper: Printed on thick, subtly textured Hahnemühle paper made from 100% cotton, valued for its quality. The paper has a deckled edge, perfect for floating framing.
- Size: Each sheet measures 329 x 483 mm (A3+) (13" × 19"), with the image itself just under 20 x 26 cm.
